Sibley Gardens
Our Story
Sibley Gardens first opened its doors in 1935, originally located just across the street and slightly north of where the restaurant stands today. In 1944, Sam (Severio) and Mary Piunti purchased the restaurant, beginning a family legacy that continues to this day. Five years later, in 1949, the restaurant moved to its current location on the west side of Jefferson Avenue following the expansion of McLouth Steel.
Although Sam and Mary owned the building, the restaurant was operated by other owners for a short time in the early 1950s while Sam opened Sam’s Tavern in nearby Wyandotte and Mary served as chef at Wyandotte’s North Shore Club. Their passion for hospitality never faded, and in 1961 Mary and her son Sam returned to the business, rebuilding Sibley Gardens into one of the Downriver area’s most beloved dining destinations. Mary led the kitchen with her timeless Italian recipes, while Sam welcomed guests and oversaw the front of the house.
Today, Mary’s recipes remain at the heart of our menu, continuing the flavors and traditions that generations of guests have come to love. At 93 years young, Sam is still active in the business and remains a proud owner of the restaurant. He now shares ownership with his son Nick Piunti, who manages day-to-day operations and helps guide the next chapter of the family tradition. Pam Piunti oversees updates to the look and feel of Sibley Gardens, ensuring the restaurant continues to evolve while honoring its long history.
Our commitment to quality food, an exceptionally talented kitchen staff, and experienced servers who quickly learn our guests’ preferences have all contributed to Sibley Gardens’ lasting success. Over the years, many dishes have become local favorites—none more famous than our signature Steak Sammy, a Downriver classic that keeps guests coming back time and time again.
At Sibley Gardens, we take pride in honoring our history while continuing to welcome new faces through our doors. Whether you’re joining us for a family dinner, celebrating a special occasion, or visiting for the first time, we’re proud to share our traditions, our hospitality, and a great meal with every guest who walks in.
